Newt Scamander is from the Muggle world of the 1920s. So - pre Harry and went to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and sorted into the Hufflepuff house.
The films of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; plotwise is around the war that Gellert Grindleward started -before Voldemort- and Newt is trying to be neutral and have nothing to do with the war and not fight in the war like his brother did.
The war is against Gellert Grindleward and his followers; that believe magic users shouldn't have to hide from Muggles and be in the shadows.
Newt does not want to pick a side - even if Newt is rather fond of his Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher - Albus Dumbledore.
J.K. Rowling said there will be 5 films and film 2 (The Crimes of Grindleward premieres November 2018)
In the first film; Newt takes a boat trip from London to New York City to head towards Arizona to free his Hippogriff.
However, shenanigans happen in New York City.
